How to Measure for Window Treatments

Window treatments can really liven up a room, but nothing brings a lovely piece of décor down like messed-up measurements. This time around, don't let your window fall prey to simple measuring mistakes. Instead, take charge, and follow our basic tips for a foolproof design plan.
To begin, always use a proper measuring tool. When it comes to your curtains, accuracy is extremely important, so use a metal retractable tape measure. Fabric or vinyl tape strips may sag and give an incorrect measurement. Unlike with body measurements, where the tailor can fully extend the tape with their arms, windows are wide and oftentimes too large to keep a fabric material perfectly straight. Metal retractable tape is beneficial in its stability, and also has a helpful thumb accuracy button, which allows you to keep tape straight and extended without holding onto it.
If you are planning on using a curtain rod, then select the rod first. This will be your guide to the length and width of your curtains. Standard curtain rods are hung 6 inches above a window frame with about 2 to 3 inches on either side of the window. The length of your curtain panels will depend on your bottom point. Depending on your style preferences, these numbers can be adjusted. For example, for a sleeker, modern look, you may choose a chic curtain that fits perfectly within the confines of the window frame. Or, for a flowy romantic look, you can select overly long and thick curtains. It's all in your taste.
If you are planning on purchasing blinds, curtains, shutters or drapes from a store but do not have a specific curtain rod in mind, then measure the following dimensions: the length and width inside the window casing, the length and width outside the window casing, and 6 inches above the top of the window to the floor. These measurements should suffice to give the salesperson enough information to guide you to the proper materials. These measurements will also help you to determine what size curtains or drapes to buy. For accuracy purposes, always measure everything twice, then write it down immediately afterward. Bring the original scrap paper with you, to avoid any possible error. Once curtains are tailored to your preferences, particularly from a custom shop, they are extremely difficult to return for a full refund, so accuracy is key.
Keep in mind that if you want a fuller curtain, one where the material folds liberally, you should purchase panels that are at least double the width of your windows. This gives you liberties with how much you want to fold the panels and tailor them to your room. Also, be sure to mention to the salesperson the exact type of measurements that you are discussing. For example, if you take the measurements from the outside of your window frame, then let the salesperson know so. The same applies for any other measurements. Having all the different measurements will help you and the salesperson work together to see what looks may work best for your window.
In the end, you want to choose the right drapes, but nothing will work if the measurements are wrong. So, be careful, be precise and most of all, enjoy your new window treatments!
