How to Plan the Perfect Picnic for Two

It isn't too hard to get tired of the old "dinner and a movie" ritual. You can try bowling, dinner at home, a walk through the park, or even try out an art museum. We all like a nice change of pace when it comes to a date, and who doesn't love a nice picnic under the sun? If you want to plan the perfect picnic, ask yourself these questions.

Will the weather cooperate?

Chances are, if you're planning a picnic, the weather has been on the sunny side. But don't forget to check beforehand. Take a look at the 7-day forecast before you begin your planning. It's never a bad idea to throw some rain ponchos and an umbrella in the backseat of your car (just in case).

What will we eat?

Picnic food can really be anything. You can prepare a hot meal beforehand, but keep in mind that it might get too cold by the time you arrive. Picking up food from your favorite restaurant is also an option, but having a hand in the selection and preparation of your meal makes it even more special. Here are some easy picnic options that can get you started:
  • Sandwiches
  • Potato salad
  • Pasta salad
  • Fresh fruits and veggies
  • Cheese and crackers
You want to make sure the food will taste fresh when you finally crack into it, so it might be a good idea to trade that wicker picnic basket in for a cooler. Don't forget to bring the drinks. Some easy and romantic ideas for beverages are:
  • Wine
  • Champagne
  • Sparkling cider
  • Fresh-squeezed fruit juice
You don't want to bring any of your nice plates, cups or cutlery outdoors, so you can opt for plastic alternatives. There are even plastic stemware options, to ensure you don't lose that romantic feel to your meal.

What else do we need to bring?

Of course you know that you need to bring food, drinks and a blanket, but you don't want the fun to stop when the food is gone. Consider bringing these extras to make your day special:
  • Some books
  • A guitar or other musical instrument
  • Camera
  • A portable radio

Where will we go?

There are plenty of traditional picnic locations to choose from, but the park and the beach are always around. These days, a lot of places will let you enjoy your picnic in a whole new way. Here are some unique alternatives to your typical picnic location:
  • Lakeside
  • National parks
  • Quick-trip island locales
  • Off-season sports stadiums
  • Wineries and vineyards
Check and see if these places allow picnics. It could be a new experience for you both! Regardless of where you decide to have your picnic, make sure that you find out if there is a good spot for you and your date to sit and eat. You don't want to arrive only to find out that they lay a pretty hefty fine on red-checkered blankets.

What else can we do?

Don't stop at the food. After you eat, be sure to take some time to play outdoors. There are tons of activities that you and your date can enjoy together:
  • Catch
  • Frisbee
  • Kayaking
  • Bike riding
  • Hiking
Don't be afraid to turn your picnic into a fun day outdoors. You can enjoy lunch, and then take off to pursue the day's activities.
Picnics can be fun, exciting, and bring you and your date closer together. Make sure you ask them about any outdoor or food allergies before you pack your picnic basket. And don't forget to bring a blanket!
